A collection of Continental Selenus pattern pieces made of bone. It is not even a partial set, but all kinds are represented and the existing pieces are in good order. One can spot similarities with 18th C English Bird Nest pattern. The small-headed Knight looks also rather early. I think that the lot comes from the 18th century.

Hello, I found your blog very professional. Thank you. I have very interesting ivory chess set. Will you be interesting to comment it, I will send you pictures. Thank you Ramutis
My email is pleasesendtoeu@yahoo.com
I've recently started making glass chess sets and stumbled onto your blog via Eldrbarry's site looking for inspiration and just to see the different types of sets.
I wanted to say thank you; I've only looked through the first few pages, but your blog is interesting, well written, and downright fascinating.
I hope I can find time this weekend to come back and have a look at the rest!
hi
Do you know of anyone that might be able to make a replacement chess piece for us. We have an antique ivory chess set with very delicate hand crafted pieces. We are missing a red pawn which is in the shape of an eastern soldier holding a scimitar. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Alex
Hi there,
I've just purchased an antique chess set. The seller said it was given to her by a friend who was in her 80's and she got it from her grandmother. Apparently it came to Canada from Ireland. It is apparently made of bone and there are red and white pieces with a small sliding lid box and a leather folding board. Some pieces have obviously been repaired but all pieces are present and they all match. If I send you pictures, could you tell more about it (age, where it was made etc.)?
Thanks, Angela
Dear Angela, please let me know how to contact you.
Hi,

I am wondering if you can help me find information on a set that was my Father's. I know it was made in Japan c. 1930-1950, probably made of ivory. The pawns are carved to match the coresponding piece; i.e. the rook' pawn holds a key, the knight's holds a shield, the Bishop's a fan, etc. It comes in it's own box that folds out as the board. I can send pictures with any additional information you might need. You can reach me at dmyers1381@msn.com
